Using vine charcoal, charcoal pencil, an eraser and brushes, Tim will demonstrate his approach to drawing from a Master painting. He will use drawing to explore the painting’s compositional complexity – an abstract language of hidden meaning that ties together the grandest gestures to the smallest details.
By adopting a spontaneous and experimental approach to the material, Tim will also explore how drawing can inform and change the way we see, especially if approached as an act of discovery rather than passive copying. He will build a drawing from a scaffolding of linear relationships to a more fully fleshed-out description of the light and forms that give life to the painting, demonstrating a means to think through and unify multiple ideas about a single subject.
