Supply List

Painters from around the world and throughout time have explored the territory that exists between the representation of our shared reality and the interpretation of it as shape, color and drawing on a flat surface. As painters, we do not have to choose between the seductive magic of the illusion of three-dimensional form and the formal possibilities of abstraction; we can hold onto both as expressive opportunities.

In this 3-day workshop, Tim will discuss and demonstrate approaches to the dynamic space that exists between abstraction and figuration. Focusing on the intersection of personal subject matter and compositional ambition, participants will develop their own work while exploring the works of historical and contemporary artists. Sessions will include slide discussions, practical demonstrations and critiques of class work; each will be supplemented by homework suggestions, readings and artists to explore.

Although some painting experience may be beneficial to participants, this course is suitable for painters of all levels. Tim will demonstrate using acrylics, but any opaque painting medium is also suitable.
