Learn the secrets to creating successful spontaneous paintings that capture the essence of your subject. It involves keeping the freshness of the work in your sketchbooks, while making paintings that look complete.

This course will introduce you to approaches that combine ink and water media using various pens, brushes, and twigs and capture the spirit of portraits, landscapes and still life on the page through colour and expressive handling, taking inspiration from the sketch work of artists from JMW Turner to Victor Hugo.

Step-by-step demonstrations will show a range of approaches and techniques that bring intuition to the painting process. Painting exercises will be introduced to encourage you to work gesturally and combine playful experimentation with accurate handling. Materials that will be explored and explained include dip pens, brush pens, brushes, and twigs. Instruction will be given on techniques through demonstration.

No drawing experience is necessary.
