What gives a portrait its power? In this course, we’ll explore how to move beyond likeness to create portraits that carry presence—paintings that feel alive, that connect, that speak.
Each session focuses on a key concept in portraiture, drawing inspiration from artists such as Van Gogh, Modigliani, Vuillard, and lesser-known but equally powerful women artists like Marie Laurencin, Tove Jansson, and Dame Laura Knight. These artists remind us that portraiture is not just a record—it’s an interpretation, shaped by color, line, brushwork, and the hand of the artist.
We’ll also look at contemporary influences, from fashion illustration to film stills, discovering how visual storytelling enhances the impact of a painted face. You’ll be encouraged to take risks, embrace intuition, and allow the medium to guide you. Tim will demonstrate practical techniques and innovative materials recipes. Through inventive studies and layered mark-making, you’ll find ways to express not just who your subject is—but how they feel.
Whether you’re refining your portrait practice or seeking a new creative direction, this course offers a space to deepen your craft while staying open to surprise, beauty, and personal expression.
