East Meets West: Unveiling the Brushstrokes of Tradition and Influence is a deep dive into Asian and Japanese art and the impact it had on Western Art, especially twentieth century painters from Manet to Van Gogh. Participants will delve into the serene and intricate practices that have shaped this art form, from the techniques of masters like Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, and Hakuin Ekaku, highlighting the simplicity, depth, and beauty of brush painting,
This hands-on drawing and painting course provides a unique opportunity to explore the cross-cultural inspirations and exchanges that have bridged East and West and continue to inspire today.
Participants will learn brush, ink and watercolour techniques through hands-on exercises. They’ll explore styles from dynamic Ukiyo-e strokes to tranquil Zen paintings. The course isn’t just about learning skills; it’s also about understanding the culture and philosophy behind Asian brush painting.
As students progress, they’ll appreciate the art of Asian and Japanese painting and discover the unique artists who thrived in the meeting of East and West. They’ll develop technical skills and a broader cultural perspective, and be encouraged to incorporate traditional Eastern techniques into their own art.
The course is open to everyone, from beginners to experienced artists. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to learn, explore, and be inspired by the blend of Eastern and Western art traditions.
