This three-week workshop is designed to immerse students in contemporary mixed media processes using acrylic pastel, oil pastel, gouache, and collage. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on exercises, students will explore how to layer wet and dry materials, build dynamic surfaces, and develop paintings through iterative change.
Day 1 focuses on material discovery and foundational principles, including an overview of each medium and a practical introduction to color, value, and chroma. Students will complete an exercise combining wet and dry media to establish effective layering strategies.
Day 2 emphasizes surface development through multiple layers, with instruction in simplifying, obliterating, and reconstructing imagery to strengthen composition and intention.
Day 3 introduces collage as a structural tool, integrating cut and adhered elements to restructure and re-activate the work, resulting in resolved, visually rich mixed media pieces.
Students will leave with increased confidence in combining materials, stronger decision-making around surface and composition, and a set of repeatable techniques for continued mixed media exploration.
