Susan Greenstein – Working Quickly: Trusting Your Intuition (Recording)

Susan Greenstein will lead a workshop to help you create some quick paintings. Why create quick paintings? So many times our first marks and initial choice are very strong ones. Sometimes our further additions and fussing in developing our work tends to loose the immediacy and freshness found in those first decisions. Also, working quickly can become an extremely helpful tool in working outdoors. It can be almost like taking notes, and bringing them back to the studio to use as a guide for more developed work.

Come join Susan in creating 3- 10 minute paintings. She will begin the session with a timed demonstration to show how she will use her limited time to build her painting. The first 10 minute painting will be monochromatic so that we may focus completely on values. The second painting will be using a limited palette with one set of complimentary colors. That last  painting will be full color, if you choose, or a second limited palette piece with another set of complimentary colors. There will be time allotted to discuss our experiences through this workshop as well as time for questions.

We will be working with simple still life compositions. Please gather some objects that you can arrange for a still life. You only need 3-4 objects. Here are some suggestions and some arrangements that might be helpful. Perhaps a piece of fruit, a bottle and a bowl, or a pitcher, bottle and piece of fruit. Have light shining on your objects from one direction, either from a lamp or from a window.

Free!

Susan Greenstein lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA at Pratt Institute where she was exposed to many ways of working and looking at the world. A deep interest in pattern has been a constant inspiration for Greenstein. At times she finds these patterns while observing flora and architecture at how they are interwoven. At other times, Greenstein finds these patterns in a more abstracted form. This can especially be seen in her recent monoprints, which are inspired by memories of patterns.
