Join Susan Greenstein as she focuses on working with two different approaches to drawing with ink. Using a micron pen, Susan will demonstrate ways of focusing on the beauty of a simple line and how much you can describe with a line. She will also focus on working with a variety of mark-making to create tone, pattern and texture.

Susan will introduce working with a Kuretake brush pen as we move further along in this course. She will the wide variety of marks you can create using this brush/pen as well as rich, dark areas. Susan will also demonstrate ways of combining text with an image, using this pen.

Week 1 – We will focus on contour line, drawing several objects just using line to describe what we see. How much can we describe within the limitation of simply using line? Susan will do a demonstration. She will also  show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Week 2 – We add texture, pattern and texture and tone to the drawings we create this week using a variety of mark-making. We will do some exploration of mark making and then apply them to the drawings we create. Susan will do a demonstration. She will also show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Week 3 – We will begin to work with the Kurateke pen. We will explore the very different marks that can be created using this pen. Each participant will work on an object that they own that is important or interesting to them. Working from observation, we will draw the selected item, using the brush pen to create a variety of lines and mark-making to draw this object. Susan will do a demonstration of working this way. She will also show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Week 4 – We will continue working with the Kuretake pen. This week, we will work from an image from a museum. Using a website that has work from an abundance of museums around the world or working from your own photos from a trip to a museum, we will select an object. We will also be invited to incorporate text with our object. Susan will do a demonstration of working this way. She will also show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.
