Join Susan Greenstein as she focuses on working with two different approaches to drawing with ink. Using a micron pen, Susan will demonstrate ways of focusing on the beauty of a simple line and how much you can describe with a line. She will also focus on working with a variety of mark-making to create tone, pattern and texture.

Susan will introduce working with a Kuretake brush pen as we move further along in this course. She will the wide variety of marks you can create using this brush/pen as well as rich, dark areas. Susan will also demonstrate ways of combining text with an image, using this pen.

Week 1 – We will focus on the contour line drawing – observed contour drawing as well as blind contour. Finding the power and simplicity of a single   line. Susan will do a demonstration. She will also  show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Week 2 – We explore a variety of marks to create texture, pattern and   value to the drawings we create this week. Using dark shapes next to lighter forms will open up more possibilities of creating depth in our drawings. Susan will do a demonstration. She will also show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Week 3 – We will begin to work with the Kurateke pen, exploring the very different marks that can be created using this pen. We will work on an object that they own that is important or interesting to them. Working from observation, we will draw the selected item, using the brush pen to create a variety of lines and mark-making to draw this object. We will also explore creating objects within an environment. Susan will do a demonstration of working this way. She will also show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Week 4 – We will continue working with the Kuretake pen. This week, we will work from a photograph we have selected from a past vacation or trip and bring it to life using the Micron or Kkuretake pen.  We will also be invited to incorporate text within our drawings. Susan will do a demonstration of working this way. She will also show some of her work as well as the work of other artists. Time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Susan Greenstein lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA at Pratt Institute where she was exposed to many ways of working and looking at the world. A deep interest in pattern has been a constant inspiration for Greenstein. At times she finds these patterns while observing flora and architecture at how they are interwoven. At other times, Greenstein finds these patterns in a more abstracted form. This can especially be seen in her recent monoprints, which are inspired by memories of patterns.
