Focusing on a corner of your home or any internal space is a great way to study light within your paintings. When Susan paint parts of rooms in her home, it helps her to see those areas and appreciate them in a whole new way. Also, when Susan travels, she loves painting and drawing the spaces where she stays or other interiors that attract her. It becomes the greatest souvenir of any place one could have.

We will explore how light, space and composition are used to create an interior painting. Whether you are wanting to capture an idea for the light, an architectural detail or an inside view looking outdoors, Susan Greenstein will guide you along to make painting interiors part of your painting practice.

This class is appropriate for those who have taken Susan’s last class as well as those beginning or revisiting their watercolor journey.

We will cover:

Week 1 – We will focus on negative space, the space between and around objects. This will help to create the spaces within an interior and find a way of simplifying and seeing a space in a new way. We will also focus on value within this painting to help create believable spaces within our paintings. Susan will do a demonstration, focusing specifically on finding the negative shapes. She will show how she begins and how she brings her painting to completion. We will look at some of artists who have painted interiors and discuss them.

Week 2 – We will look at the work created by participants during the week and discuss. Susan will answer questions and we can discuss discoveries and challenges that each participant might have experienced as well as strategies to help with problem-solving. Susan will do a demonstration, using a limited palette of analogous colors. We will look at several more artists’ paintings of interiors and discuss them.

Week 3 – We will look at the work created by participants during the week and discuss. Susan will answer questions and we can discuss discoveries and challenges that each participant might have experienced as well as strategies to help with problem-solving. Susan will do a demonstration, using a full painting wet-on-wet technique, allowing that layer to dry and then working backing her painting for more definition. We will look at several more artists’ paintings of interiors and discuss them.
