In this intensive workshop we’ll explore the many ways color determines the space, structure and mood of a painting composition. Students will work from a variety of subjects to analyze how complementary and analogous color, and color value and temperature, influence painting design. Then we’ll use this color theory to improvise our own unique painting compositions.
In our Zoom classes, Susan will share master and contemporary paintings to illustrate color theory concepts, demonstrate key color approaches, and offer critiques of student’s home exercises. You’ll leave the workshop with a new confidence about color and new ideas to put color theory to practice in your own painting.
Student comment: “Susan, you are a first-rate teacher and such an inspiration! Thanks to your dedication, determination and focus, you got us to do and learn more in a short period of time than I would have believed possible. From your classes on color theory with clear diagrams to your awe-inspiring painting demonstrations, to your lovely and evocative slide lectures to your very helpful critiques — I am immensely grateful for them all.”
Susan Abbott graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA and MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute, College of Art. She has worked as a professional artist since that time, exhibiting in galleries and museums around the country and teaching art workshops around the world. Her paintings are represented in corporate and individual collections and featured widely in national publications and media, including on the Oprah Winfrey Show and a regular column on creativity in “Artist Magazine”. Abbott’s oils and watercolors are inspired by her passion for color, design, and the specifics of place, especially America’s small town and rural landscape.
