What is the appropriate role of a reference image in creating an abstracted landscape? We’ll tackle this question throughout this four-week class, focused on Sparking Abstraction. We’ll look at examples by contemporary artists who use the landscape as a vehicle for exploring abstract concepts. Beyond the tangible elements of the landscape, what are the intangible qualities being expressed? By isolating a number of strategies, students will be encouraged to developing their own artistic voice while starting with the landscape.

Scott Gellatly holds a degree in painting and drawing from the University of Oregon and has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. A landscape painter at heart, Scott’s work has become more abstracted, with greater emphasis on pure color and gestural mark-making to evoke nature. Scott is an Oregon native and lives in Portland with his family. www.scottgellatly.com
