Explore abstraction by taking the fundamentals of landscape painting to new and exciting directions! This class will focus on the process of pulling imagery from nature to emphasize the formal aspects of painting – color, composition, movement and space. Open to all oil painters who are willing to let go, experiment and take chances!

We’ll dive into the history of abstraction, utilizing plein air works in the studio, possibilities through our materials/tools, and color palette strategies.

Each session will include a presentation/demonstration, followed by a series of painting exercises. Students will be able to show their work online for individual and group discussions.

This class is part of Scott’s “Abstracting the Landscape” series. It builds on themes explored in previous classes. You do not need to have taken Scott’s previous course to sign up.

Scott Gellatly holds a degree in painting and drawing from the University of Oregon and has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. A landscape painter at heart, Scott’s work has become more abstracted, with greater emphasis on pure color and gestural mark-making to evoke nature.

Scott is an Oregon native and lives in Portland with his family. scottgellatly.com
