Explore the dynamic friendship between two artistic icons—John Singer Sargent and Antonio Mancini—in this unique class that blends art history with hands-on studio practice. Sargent, renowned for his masterful portraits, luminous watercolors, and expressive figure work, once declared Mancini “the best living painter.” Though their styles and temperaments diverged greatly, their mutual respect shaped a fascinating creative relationship that continues to inspire artists today.

In this course, we’ll delve into the personal histories, artistic approaches, and cultural contexts of both painters—uncovering what made their work revolutionary and how their friendship influenced their practice. Alongside lectures and discussions, students will engage in master studies, live demonstrations, and painting exercises rooted in the techniques of both artists. Individual and group critiques will support each painter’s technical growth and deepen their understanding of classical principles. By the end of the class, participants will have gained not only a deeper appreciation of Sargent and Mancini, but also tangible growth in their own technical skill, observational ability, and painterly voice.
