Discover how to use the power of Notan to organize values and create a better composition, in this 2-week “crash course” with award winning artist Rose Irelan.

By paring down the elements of the subject to a simple armature design of between 2 to 4 values, learn how to plan your composition and see possible design pitfalls in the sketching phase before moving on to painting.

Rose will demo in both gray markers and gouache for this class to show you a range of methods to work up your value studies. References will be supplied for this workshop and or you can work from your own photographs to practice notions and value notans.

Week 1 – Black and White Notans

We will learn what a Notan is and how you can best apply this beautiful aesthetic to your work. By paring down the elements of your subject to a simple armature design of 2 values you can better plan your composition and see possible design pitfalls in the sketching phase before moving on to painting. This is why Notan is such a valuable method to incorporate into your painting process. We will work from a variety of images and subjects. We will first use Master studies to understand the structure of master paintings. Then we will use photos and see how we can reduce those images into our own design interpretation using just black and white.

Week 2 – Value Notans (studies)

We will work with design solutions utilizing 3 and 4 values to make a value plan for your composition based on 4 major types of lighting situations. Exploring the power of designing within limitations and how working with a value plan actually creates more artistic expression and opportunity to find your own artistic voice.
