Richard Suckling – What to Use and What to Lose: Simplifying the Motif in Soft Pastel (Online); Tuesdays, February 3 & 10, 2026

This class was held in the past and is no longer available for registration. Please view our Online Course Catalog for current class listings.

Date: Tuesdays, February 3 & 10, 2026
Time: 9:30 am-noon Pacific Time, 12:30 pm-3:00 pm Eastern Time, 5:30 pm-8:00 pm UK Time
Level: All levels welcome
Medium: Pastel

In this two-week soft pastel class we will be tackling the landscapes, seascapes and florals looking at how we can simplify a subject for maximum effect. Editing a complicated scene and capturing the essentials in any medium can be challenging and we will look at various techniques which allow us to do this successfully. This approach will help painters loosen up and not be trapped by the unnecessary detail in a subject  whilst still allowing us to capture the essence of the motif. This workshop is suitable for pastel artists of all abilities including beginners and will have something to offer painters in other mediums dealing with this aspect of the painting process.
