In this course we will be looking at Mark Rothko and his work, especially in relation to Contemporary Landscape Painting. We will also be exploring Rothko’s visual language and its lineage, from Turner and Monet to Matisse and the influence these Artists had on Rothko and his paintings..
With lots of demos and painting time, this course will be an exploration into creating depth, atmosphere and emotional/philosophical resonance in our work. We will look at how color relates, using a complimentary palette to discover how ‘Color Fields’ work. Along with an in depth look into perspective and building atmosphere, we will also focus on the balance of geometrical structure and visual poetry/painterly expression.
The course will not teach you how to paint like Rothko but instead draw influence from his work.
Richard will be working in both Gouache and Oil. Participants can work in any paint medium, except watercolor.
