This is the first in a series of 4 week Mastering Portraiture courses with Peter Keegan. In this course, you will immerse yourself in the genre of portraiture, building your confidence and skill to create portraits which not only capture a likeness but also convey emotion and portray feeling.
This course requires the student to have a basic knowledge and some experience of painting portraits as during the 4 weeks, you will utilise your existing knowledge of colour, tone and form to push your mark-making and use of colour beyond traditional conventions, exploring and creating portraits which are more dynamic, vibrant and energetic as a result.
We will start by exploring a more sketch like approach to mark making before moving on to look at where and how we can use vibrant, colour substitutions to the greatest effect. We will build on our progress from these first two lessons by considering composition and looking at mark-making tools and techniques, before bringing all that we have learnt together in the final week. Participants will work with Peter, observing demonstrations and working together on a different portrait each week. Demonstrations will be painted in oil, though acrylic painters are also welcome.
You may work from Peter’s photos or from your own, similar, images.
