This two week acrylic expressive portraiture class will reveal the alternative processes and strategies Paul employs to produce his distinctive portrait paintings.

Paul is widely known as a landscape artist and published a book on the subject last year (Experimental Nature in Acrylics: Our Landscapes – Batsford Books). However, he also has a strong interest in portraiture and figurative painting and the desire to convey subtle human emotion via the painting process. Years of observation and experimentation allowed Paul to effectively incorporate the ideas of minimalism, geometric abstraction and unusual colour palettes into his compositions. He will demonstrate these concepts, and explain how they can be applied to the student’s own work.

Alongside the compositional strategies, this course will cover Paul’s unique acrylic techniques: paint layering, acrylic washes, masking and collage. Paul’s mission is to inspire the student to experiment, liberate their mark-making and to enjoy the process of painting with total expression.
