Paul is renowned for his alternative interpretations of the landscapes (both coastal and internal) of Britain. His compositions are driven by a deep, and unique, appreciation of shape and colour. This understanding was developed by transcribing the familiar, and sometimes simple, prosaic landscapes that he loves. These methods of simplification, use of geometric patterns and shapes, experimental colour, have been employed in his portraits too. Paul believes that his use and understanding of abstraction has helped elevate his semi-abstract works.

In this course Paul will explain how he constructs his compositions and selects the colour palettes using various ‘starting-off points’: photographic reference; rough sketches; found patterns; memories; etc.

Each lesson will contain at least two demonstration paintings (from source reference, planning, concept to execution), an optional (non-compulsary) assignment for practice, feedback and a Q&A. Also, there’s an exclusive forum so students can upload their paintings for feedback/critique, references for advice and ask questions.

The demonstrations will be presented in the medium of acrylic, but as the course focuses on the compositional development of ideas and colour palette choices the course will be of benefit to artists in all mediums.
