Ready to master the art of painting animals? Cows make the perfect subjects for expanding your skills in everything from brushwork technique to painting emotion! Join this special two-session workshop to learn from award-winning artist and Signature member of the Society of Animal Artists Patty Voje, who’s known for her special artistic affinity for bovine subjects. Patty will demonstrate how to loosely and quickly capture the essence of a cow, using techniques you can apply to other animal paintings and beyond. You’ll paint in alla prima style, completing a small painting in a single sitting. Through this process, you’ll create a quick underpainting to establish values, develop more confident brushwork, learn fundamentals of color harmony and temperature, and gain strategies to bring more life and movement into your paintings.
Each session includes live demonstrations, discussions on materials and techniques, and assignments to reinforce your learning. Patty will also guide you through exercises designed to strengthen your skills and confidence. At each session students will be assigned to complete a small cow painting. Reference photos for class demos will be available in advance. You are also free to work from your own photos. There will be time for Q&A at the end of each session, and individual feedback on assignments will be provided on the class message board. Patty will be teaching in oil, but feel free to work in the media you prefer. All levels are welcome!

Patty Voje is an award-winning artist based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. A figurative painter, most of her work is “alla prima” – completed in one sitting. Her command of bold color and expressive brushwork mark her style. Patty has exhibited nationally and is the recipient of numerous accolades. She studied Fine Art at the University of Minnesota and at The Atelier of Minneapolis. She is proud to be affiliated with American Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. Born and raised in the Midwest, Patty grew up on a small hobby farm where she had the good fortune to include pigs, sheep and the occasional chicken as members of the family. Her love of animals figures prominently in her art. Patty travels extensively for both pleasure and painting. In the summer you can find her in her trusty Airstream, traveling the country to compete in plein air events, stopping along the way whenever a field of cattle presents itself.
She is available for individual instruction, small group classes and workshops. Patty is an inspiring teacher who believes that sharing her process and technique is just as important as sharing her finished work.
