Color is everywhere, and is often not what we expect when we really begin to look and simply take what we see at face value. The primary thrust of Stern’s book is the idea of ‘color spots’, which he borrows from the teachings of Charles Hawthorne, who is quoted as saying things such as: “The mechanics of putting one spot of color next to another, that is the fundamental thing.”
This class will focus on working from direct observation of the still life, our goal never being more than ‘putting one spot of color next to another’. Once again, to quote Hawthorne: “The successful painter is continually painting still life.”
The rigors of putting down color spots as accurately as possible will pay ongoing dividends in your every day work. These sessions of intense, direct observation will give you a new appreciation for how much color there really is in nature, and, as it has in my case, make you think about color in an altogether different way. There is an immersive magic that comes from slowly building an image from spots of color!
