Join art writer John Seed on the first Monday of each month for a 45 minute talk on Modernism. Each presentation will provide an overview of important topics in the development of modern art and culture and will be followed by a 10 minute Q and A session.

January 3: What is Modernism?: An overview of the historical and cultural forces that gave birth to Modernism. 

February 7: The Mechanical Paradise: How rapid developments in technology challenged artists and re-shaped their visions. 

March 7: Picasso and Cubism: Understanding Picasso’s contributions to Cubism and his considerable influence.

Participants who want to further explore the topics presented can do so by purchasing “The Shock of the New” or by watching videos of the original BBC show on

John Seed is a Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History at Mount San Jacinto College, where he taught “Introduction to Modernism” for over 30 years before retiring from full-time teaching in 2017. Seed’s views were influenced by the book and video series “Shock of the New,” by Robert Hughes, which served as the textbook for the course.
