“One day whilst idly watching a stroller on the pier at Le Havre, Dufy had a strange experience; as the man stopped for a moment and then moved, his colour mass seemed to detach itself for an instant from his form.” – Sargy Mann

Award winning artist and New English Art Club member Michael Weller has long drawn inspiration from the work of Raoul Dufy. Though sometimes overlooked or dismissed as merely decorative, Raoul Dufy’s bold approach to colour and line reveals a depth that artists especially can appreciate. His ability to let line and colour exist independently—and then bring them together—is a central theme of this course.

This 4-week class is not about learning to paint like Raoul Dufy or like Michael Weller. Rather, it’s an opportunity to explore how Dufy’s influence might emerge in each student’s own work. Participants will play with the relationship between line and colour, guided by Dufy’s joyful, spontaneous spirit.

Week 1: Copy a painting by Dufy to study his unique visual language.
Week 2: Create a still life painting at home, exploring how line and color interact.
Week 3: Develop expressive self-portraits through figure studies in a mirror.
Week 4: Use personal drawings of social gatherings as the basis for small studies in oil.

Michael invites artists to engage deeply with Dufy’s example and to see what discoveries arise when color and line are allowed to dance.

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition.
