To quote Giorgio Morandi, “Nothing is more abstract than reality.” Perhaps what Morandi meant is that reality is greater than our dreams.

Join NEAC member MW for this 5-week exploration of painting the still life after Morandi. Each week, Weller will paint a still life based on one of the subjects Morandi painted in his pared-down, tonalist way. Rather than slavishly copying him, we will be inspired by Morandi’s approaches for arranging the big shapes and the lights and darks in a painting. In the end everyone’s paintings will be clearer and simpler, and very much their own. All painting mediums welcome; Michael will work in oils. Some drawing experience helpful.

Week 1 – Interpreting a Morandi still life. Looking at his shapes and colours.
Week 2 – Household objects seen at eye level.
Week 3 – Household objects seen from above.
Week 4 – Paper flowers in a vase
Week 5 – Self-portrait figure in a mirror

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition. Weller was elected to the New English Art Club in 2022.  michaelweller.co.uk
