In this 5-week course, award-winning artist and New English Art Club member Michael Weller will guide you in creating a sketchbook habit that you can incorporate into your own art practice. Working from your own environment, you will learn how to embrace your sketchbook using line drawings and color studies.

Micheal will share how he uses his sketchbook at home and outside to inform his own paintings and, through demonstrations, exercises and discussion, teach various ways to manage a drawing, composition and intervals of space. Students will draw and share their work in class.

As Michael says, “It takes a few goes to get a good drawing. Any artist’s own signature or style develops naturally, over time, by drawing from life and responding to what we see around us. This is especially for people who feel a bit guilty they don’t do as much drawing as they’d like. Some experience of drawing is helpful, but all levels of experience are welcome.

Week by week :

1) Copying an old master painting – Bonnard or Vuillard

2) A few items of fruit on a plate.

3) Corner of the room – a chair by a table

4) Self-portrait in the mirror.

5) Figure in the room – in the mirror.

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition. michaelweller.co.uk
