Using the kitchen as inspiration, join British painter Michael Weller for this 4-week class painting from life at home. The kitchen has inspired many artists, including British painters John Bratby and Jean Cooke, who once tenderly painted a shopping bag on a table.

Michael will guide you in this exploration of capturing the everyday as subject matter, from starting with the selection of the composition and addressing the management of relative sizes, to showing how to deal with lights and darks. It’s less about the finished painting and more about discovering different ways of working. More fun than that sounds, discover that it’s also about enjoying the painting process. The hope is that by the end of this exploration the students’ work will still be their own, but their drawing will be  stronger and their use of colors clearer. Class will include in-depth critiques of student work and instructor demonstrations.

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition. michaelweller.co.uk
