Join Michael Weller for this four-week painting journey inspired by the work of British artist Winifred Nicholson (1893–1981), celebrated for her luminous flower paintings, intimate domestic scenes, and landscapes drawn from life in Cumberland, Scotland, and Cornwall.
Known for her bold simplicity, saturated color, and confident use of grey and black, Nicholson’s work feels both modern and deeply personal. In this class, her paintings serve as a point of departure—encouraging students to loosen up, take risks, and strengthen their own visual voice.
Through demonstrations, discussion, and guided studio time, Michael Weller leads students in exploring what makes Nicholson’s work so compelling: fearless color, pared-down forms, and the quiet power of everyday settings. The goal is not to paint like Winifred Nicholson—or like the instructor—but to use her work as a catalyst for bolder, more confident personal painting.
This is a supportive, exploratory class with plenty of individual guidance, focused on curiosity, experimentation, and enjoyment.
Weekly Structure:
Week 1 – Loosely interpret a chosen Winifred Nicholson painting as a color study, focusing on color relationships rather than accuracy.
Week 2 – Paint flowers from life in a simple home setting, exploring composition and saturated color.
Week 3 – Paint flowers by a door or window at night, working with contrast, limited light, and atmosphere.
Week 4 – Paint from a favorite drawing of your own, inspired by Nicholson’s spirit rather than direct observation. Working from a drawing allows for heightened color and personal interpretation.
Ideal for painters interested in modern approaches to color, flowers, and finding freedom within structure.
