When British artist Michael Weller paints, he often begins by creating what he calls ‘color shape studies.’ In this 6-week painting exploration, Michael will show you how to use color shape studies to inform your own painting practice. Discover how to let yourself  ‘move around the painting’ as you consider different arrangements of shapes within the four sides of your canvas. Learn to compare big shapes next to small ones, the intervals and overlaps between objects and the overall combined shape that these combinations make. Learn to look at color, composition, tonal control and the use of thin versus thick paint.

Each week Michael will paint and demo from life, sharing how he sets up his still-life.* Students are invited to paint along during class time from their own still-life setups (or paint later from the class recording). The first class will include creating a color study of an Old Master painting, focusing on the big shapes.

Some drawing experience is helpful, but all levels are welcome. Paint in oils, acrylics or gouache.

*Michael suggests certain design elements which he tends to go back to- a few lemons side-by-side, a milk bottle, a packet of coffee and a mug,  a bowl, a jug and a cup. Also, some items from the kitchen and a few fruits.

Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition. michaelweller.co.uk
