Explore different approaches to abstracting the still life in this 4-week class with award winning artist Michael Weller. As Michael explains,“Looking at size, proportion, tone and color helps me to approach paintings as color studies. It’s a slightly abstract way into painting. It’s how I paint.”
Working with just a few simple shapes, learn the steps that Weller uses in his painting process, from preliminary drawings to composition decisions and blocking in the big color shapes.
Michael will demo in each class and will give feedback on participants’ paintings during the week on the group message board.
Week 1 – Master copy “color study” of a still life by Braque.
Week 2 – Life-size color study of a still life we arrange in our own homes.
Week 3 – Sight-size color study of a still-life setup at home.
Week 4 – Painting from drawings of still life setup at home.
Michael Weller studied librarianship in Manchester and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Life-drawing cheered him up. Later he did a degree in Fine Art and studied portrait-painting at Lavender Hill Studios and drawing and painting with the New English Art Club. In 2015 he won the Le Clerc Fowle Medal for a group of outstanding paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ annual exhibition, and the Winsor & Newton Award for a painting at the New English Art Club annual exhibition. michaelweller.co.uk
