Level: Should be familiar with oil painting but can be new to cold wax
Medium: Oil and cold wax

The beauty and rich quality of a cold wax painting is created with multiple layers that create a history of color, value and texture. In this course, Melinda will demonstrate how to create those layers with multiple tools and techniques. Many cold wax artists work with pure abstraction, however this medium can be used with realist images as well.  Learn the various techniques that can apply to and enhance both approaches.

See why a cold wax painting is not the same as a “traditional” oil painting. Learn to embrace the surprises and unpredictable results that can happen with this medium while additionally learning methods to help you control it. Surprises with cold wax are part of what make this medium so exciting and fun!

Design and composition will be discussed as well with focus on the concept of Contrast to balance and give interest in your work.

Through weekly demos, exercises, group discussion, and individual feedback, participants will gain knowledge of the medium and how to best incorporate it with their own subject matter.

A native Northern Californian, Melinda Lomax Cootsona received her BFA from the California College of the Arts in Oakland in 1981. Melinda has been included in exhibitions at The Bakersfield Museum of Art, San Luis Obispo Plein Air Painting Competition and the Triton Museum where she won an Award of Merit.

Her abstract figurative work, with its use of lines and composition, is a nod to her BA in Architectural Interior Design and the influences of Bay Area figurative arts like Diebenkorn and Park. Her process always begins as an abstract, with multiple layers of shapes, lines, patterns and colors built up numerous times before she even considers the ultimate “subject matter.” Often her paintings depict private moments in a personal life. www.melindacootsona.com/
