This class requires completing the prerequisite, Part I: Landscape Painting in the Tonalist Style.
Capturing light, luminosity and atmosphere are main components in Tonalism. In this 4-week class, with a focus on painting the sky, you’ll continue to learn and apply techniques and methods used in creating Tonalist landscapes from Section 1. Soft light, twilight and early morning light conditions will be studied and demonstrated.
Further exploration of color and color mixing using complementaries; applying techniques to achieve soft light, and simplifying form will guide the workshop. Continued study of historical and contemporary works will provide insight to the techniques and methods of Tonalism in landscape painting.
Each class session includes instructor demos, guided exercises, group discussion and critique of participants’ work. Group critiques throughout the class will offer an opportunity for growth, to share ideas and learn from others. Participants will paint outside of class and can work from imagination or photo reference.
