In this 4-week class you’ll learn approaches and methods to create a Tonalist landscape. Tonalism is a distinctly American artistic style of landscape painting, founded on the use of subtle color and tone, soft and atmospheric qualities, and simplified and abstracted forms. We’ll look closely at these principles and you’ll learn to apply them to your work as you create a series of landscape studies in the Tonalist style.

There will be weekly instructor demos, guided exercises, group discussion and critique of participants’ work. We’ll focus on the history and methods of Tonalism in landscape painting, color and color mixing, tone, atmosphere, and form. Group critiques throughout the class will offer an opportunity to share ideas and learn from others. You’ll be encouraged to challenge yourself with new ways to mix and use color, and simplify elements. Participants can work from imagination or photo reference.

Mark Russell has been creating landscape and nature paintings for more than 30 years. He has exhibited his work in group shows, in galleries and museums across the country and won numerous awards. His paintings are included in private and corporate collections. He has degrees from DePaul University and The American Academy of Art in Chicago. markrussellstudio.com
