Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” — Leonardo da Vinci

Join us to create paintings that are at once bold/dynamic, and subtle/suggestive. And sophisticated! This workshop focuses on how you approach your work more than your medium of choice. Open to oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and charcoal/pencil artists.

Learn to simplify your paintings and drawings by focusing on the important stuff and getting rid of the rest. We’ll explore how to:

  • Create one-color and limited-color paintings
  • Use value contrast to add impact to your work
  • Incorporate quiet space into your compositions

Having a minimalist mindset and a simplified approach to painting helps you:

  • Start your paintings with intention and a plan; a solid underpainting = solid foundation = successful paintings
  • Incorporate a unique approach to finished paintings
  • Strengthen your compositions through filtering and editing
  • Add boldness to your work by building value contrast
  • Simplify your process
  • Increase your color knowledge—by using less color
  • Use quiet space in your work
  • Simplify shapes and elements in the landscape through suggestion and abstraction

Mark Russell has been creating landscape and nature paintings for more than 30 years. He has exhibited his work in group shows, in galleries and museums across the country and won numerous awards. His paintings are included in private and corporate collections. He has degrees from DePaul University and The American Academy of Art in Chicago. markrussellstudio.com
