Up close and intimate the floral still life provides the perfect subject to explore all the components of good design, color harmony, and paint handling. Throughout the course, expect to learn how to set up a still life floral arrangement, mix harmonious colors, and experiment with expressive brushwork and palette knife work. Emphasis will be placed upon the direction of light, focal points, composition, and edges. We will discuss making choices on what we are expressing and how to express it. All instruction will be in oil and will include live painting demonstrations. Critique will be given via message board with some discussion in class. Students should be prepared to paint from both still life setups which we will discuss in class and their own photographic reference.
