Date: Tuesdays, April 21-May 5, 2026
Time: 10:00 am-noon Pacific Time / 1:00 pm-3:00 pm Eastern Time / 6:00 pm-8:00 pm London Time)
Level: All levels welcome
Medium: Mixed media (Encaustic, Ink, Pastel, Watercolor, Oil)
Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting, with paint made from pure pigment mixed with wax and resin. The mixture is applied hot, then reheated to fuse the layers together. Encaustic is compatible with most media—including watercolor, ink, pastel, and oil (but not acrylic)—making it easy to incorporate wax into the materials you already use.
Through live demos, we’ll explore exciting ways to add rich texture to your paintings using encaustic in a variety of techniques to create dynamic, touchable surfaces. Across three classes, we’ll focus on specialty brushwork and palette knives, using irons to build and subtract texture, and incorporating bold, expressive wax carving.
You’ll learn to build texture by using specialized brushwork, palette knives, and other tools to build up areas of wax while selectively carving back into others.
We’ll also discuss how texture develops through thoughtful layering—because truly compelling encaustic surfaces take time and intention. You’ll discover how layers interact, how depth is created, and why patience pays off in a big way. The result? Paintings with so much visual and physical interest that people can barely keep their hands off them!
Finally, I’ll share guidance on one of encaustic’s most talked-about rules: fusing every layer. You’ll learn when it’s essential, when it’s optional, and how to safely bend—or even break—the rule to achieve specific textural effects.
