Still life painting in oil is a wonderful way to explore the beauty of working from life while learning how to apply paint in a way that adds supple brilliancy to a painting.  By composing and arranging the props with chiaroscuro stage lighting, we have the added benefit of discovering how light and shadow work in harmony to create form, depth of space, and drama. Leah will demonstrate how to set up a chiaroscuro still life to get the most out of the effect.  Through explanation and demonstration, you will get to know the process she uses to simplify the composition to a concept that will guide her decision-making throughout the painting process.  You will also learn, there are four stages that create the best results when painting a chiaroscuro still life.  Along the way, Leah will encourage you to use deliberate brush strokes, lost and found edges, and temperature changes, in order to tell a beautiful story in oil paint.

Leah Lopez is a lifelong artist. Seduced early on by classic realism, Leah studied traditional drawing and painting under Larry Gluck. She later continued her studies under noted artists Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel. These artists resonated with her sensibility and she learned to master the process of light and shadow. Her early mentors instilled in her the value of working from life and to this day she maintains this practice and works by natural light.
