Suggested Supply List

Join artist Kathleen Newman as she demonstrates how to interpret your photo reference and create more expressive, personal work using a variety of exercises to explore unique strategies in value and color. Beginning with a photo image, she will discuss methods of designing strong compositions by simplifying light and shadow patterns using grey scale markers or charcoal drawing. After finding the composition that inspires, she will demonstrate her method of creating color swatch sketches to work quickly around the color wheel exploring many different harmonies. Her discussion will include monochromatic, analogous, complements, split complements, and other color plans, balancing bright and neutral colors as well as exploring high, mid, and low key relationships within the value scale. Choosing a favorite or two, participants will work on larger paintings inspired by the color sketches beginning with background toning techniques on sanded pastel paper.  Kathleen  will also introduce a three step process of blocking in large shapes following the compositional sketch, refining and correcting smaller value and color shapes through layering of soft pastels, and the final. This loose, painterly process helps to convey mood and mystery rather than rendering detailed accuracy in paintings.

Reference will be provided or students may use their own. Kathleen will demonstrate in pastel. Students may work in other mediums if preferred.
