One of nature’s most captivating elements, water brings life to a painting by nature of its reflections, flowing lines, surface activity and relationship to the sky, offering a unique opportunity to observe and explore additional color strategies to create mood and atmosphere.

In this class, you will learn to capture the fluid nature of water using soft pastels (or materials of your choice). To observe and paint what you see offers an exciting foray into studying the color of light and its fascinating effects on water.

Through shape, value, color and edges, we will explore mark making techniques to recreate the shimmering surface, investigate mood through the movement of weather ~ calm, reflective or active ~ study the color of light and its fascinating reflections and create depth through layers of transparency. Whether it’s a calm, peaceful lake, gentle rolling waves, moving current on a river or tranquil pond ~ we’ll master blending, layering using both soft and hard pastels to achieve realistic reflections, textures and movement.

Kathleen will provide daily slideshow lectures, demos, live and written critique via message board throughout the course. Reference provided or student’s choice.
