The backlit subject is a fascinating light effect that artists have explored throughout history. During this workshop we will discuss and practice how to successfully use and interpret this unique application of light in order to portray the figure, landscape, and still life painting. Reference will be supplied. Step by step guidance will be taught including: palette setup, design, value control and color selection and brushwork. By the conclusion of this unique workshop, each student will gain the confidence to create convincing light effects which will elevate the visual impact in their paintings.

The workshop will run for 3 consecutive weeks. Each session will be filled with discussions, examples, demos and private critiques for each student.  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from Joe Gyurcsak, a leading veteran painter and instructor for over 40 years!

“I look at my paintings as a vehicle for creating a sense of light, atmosphere, and mood. I continually seek subject matter that is naturally being played out instead of posed. I want my subjects to look fresh, I want them to have a breath of life in the two-dimensional realm. If the painting has emotion and expression beyond the technical aspects that were employed to create it then it is a success! It is my hope that the viewer should lose their awareness of the boundaries of the painting. I am after the fleeting moments of life, those moments that happen sometimes in a quick glance!”

Joe Gyurcsak paints a broad range of subject matter including interiors, still life, figurative and plein air landscape painting. He has a keen sense for capturing the essence of his subject matter with a bold and candid approach. Joseph studied at Parsons School of Design and The School of Visual Arts in New York. He exhibits in shows and galleries across the country. His award winning paintings have established national attention with collectors.

Joseph is a sought after teacher/ workshop artist lecturing & demonstrating his 4 decades of artistic experience to over 160 major art institutions throughout the US.
