Supply List

Head to the ocean this summer for a deep dive into painting seabird “portraits.” Each class will focus on one bird species. You’ll zoom in to paint the bird’s head, as well as its eggs, while also recording some fascinating facts. In addition to focusing on painting skills and techniques, artist and naturalist Jean Mackay will share information about each bird’s habits and adaptations and explore ways to record such information in fun ways. Jean will present options for what to include so that you can make the piece uniquely your own. We’ll also review layout basics and ways to develop consistent design elements for creating a series.

Jean has spent many summers searching for seabirds from the deck of the Maine State Ferry, on boat tours to the Atlantic Puffin colony on Maine’s Eastern Egg Rock and, more recently, on Iceland’s rocky cliff-sides. Despite her perennial seasickness, she has enjoyed seeing all of the birds featured in this class—and many more—but she much prefers painting when back on land.

You may register for any of these classes individually or take the entire series.
