Supply List

Get past the perception that watercolor is a difficult and unforgiving medium! Watercolor is versatile, portable, and beautiful, with wide-ranging options for where you want to take it—from nature and urban sketching to botanical illustration to large paintings. Learn the fundamentals and techniques you need to begin painting successfully. The class is geared for beginners and for those who may have missed learning foundational skills. Unwrap your paints, get some decent watercolor paper, shed your fears (or frustrations), and let’s go!

Week 1: Getting Started with Watercolor
We’ll begin by looking at materials and practicing techniques that are key to understanding this exciting medium. Techniques will include flat and graded washes, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, soft edges, dry brush, and lifting. We’ll also cover two- and three-color mixing, pigment to water ratio, and limited palettes.

Week 2: From Flat to Form
This session focuses on how to make your subjects look dimensional. We’ll focus on recognizing basic shapes, achieving a range of values from light to dark, and using layers to build value and enrich colors. We’ll also work on adding lively shadows.
