Sketching nature is a powerful tool for connecting to the wider world around us. This class will focus on multiple approaches to capturing nature-related subjects with an eye toward deepening our understanding, appreciation, and connection to the places we live (or visit). We will work primarily in ink and watercolor, the most portable and versatile mediums for field sketching, and focus on a variety of subjects to help you build your artistic skills while experimenting with different layouts and techniques.

  • Week 1: Field Notes– Capturing the natural history of your subject with simple sketches and watercolor washes, notes, research, questions, etc.
  • Week 2: Heart & Soul Sketch– Capturing the essence of your subject with a detailed painting paired with a quote or poem.
  • Week 3: Explorer’s Sketch– Capturing a sense of discovery with multiple subjects connected by a theme.
  • Week 4: Sense of Place Sketch– Capturing key elements to convey a sense of place.

Jean Mackay is an artist, educator, and naturalist. She has been keeping an artist journal for more than nearly 20 years a way to study and share the beauty and diversity of nature, as well as to record the art of everyday living. Working in all kinds of settings, from tide pools to farm fields to her own backyard, Jean’s journals reflect a keen eye for detail and profound sense of wonder. Jean teaches at the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine and at the Art School of Columbia County in New York. Her blog, Drawn In, shares the ordinary, yet extraordinary things that she encounters close to home and farther afield.
