Supply List

A three-week workshop which focuses on using photographs as references for narrative oil portraits. Whether you are interested in preserving family – or community – memories or in working on a commission, this course will be the ideal starting point. Your tutor will provide various demonstrations and give lots of constructive feedback on your work.

In Week One we will consider how to select and edit photographs and we’ll have a go at drawing a couple of simple compositions. We will also consider the representation of light and shade by producing a value study.

In Week Two we will reinforce the importance of value but we’ll also look at the use and impact of colour. Often a photo reference can be black and white – or sepia/faded – so we will examine how to approach this.

Finally, in Week Three we will consider the effect of mark-making – and we will start the process of creating a series of narrative portraits with a common theme.
