This workshop focuses on the fundamental principles of painting the human figure using a limited palette.
Theses principles – gesture block in, linear construction, proportion adjustment using anatomic landmarks, value/temperature calibration, and paint application – are introduced through series of exercises in a sequential order from basic to complex. The workshop will start with shorter exercises and end with a longer pose where students will have the opportunity of applying skills learned to a long pose painting.
Though not necessary, students are encouraged to work alongside the instructor during class time. Feedbacks and critiques can then be offered while the model is still posing in real time. For students who are only able to work outside of class time, the instructor will be able to offer written feedback on the learning platform between classes.
The workshop will end with a partial session (no model) on Feb 24th where the instructor will offer final critiques on works done over the course of this workshop.
Instruction includes lectures, demos and individual guidance according to each student’s needs and skillset.
JaFang Lu earned her BA degree from the City College of New York University. She studied under the portrait painter Nelson Shanks at the Art Students League of New York and Studio Incamminati, an atelier founded by Mr. Shanks, where JaFang currently teaches. In addition to teaching at local art institutions in and around Philadelphia PA, JaFang also conducts drawing and painting workshops around the country. She currently lives and maintains a studio in the suburb of Philadelphia PA. She has shown locally with the Avery Gallery and Stanek Gallery. www.jafanglu.com
