Even the greats learned by copying. Sargent recreated Velázquez to master his simplicity and tonal control; Degas copied Ingres’ to learn his elegant line. They weren’t imitating for imitation’s sake—they were unlocking the secrets of the artists they admired. In this four-week online portrait workshop, you’ll join that tradition while building your own creative voice.
You’ll make brief master copies to crack the code of two different artists’ value, colour, brushwork, and edges, then apply those insights to portraits of your own subjects.
Each week blends analysis with personal creativity, leading to a final personal portrait that highlights one technical discovery you most admired, woven into your own subject and style.
