Supply List

Shadows are crucial for the illusion of 3-dimensional form in our work, but they’re also one of the trickiest things to paint.  Painters struggle to know how dark to make them, what colors and temperatures to fill them with, and how to transition from the shadow to light with brushwork, edge treatment, and color.

You’ll learn a variety of methods – from traditional to contemporary – for creating shadows that feel integrated and attractive on their subjects.  As well, you’ll explore different tonal registers, high and low chroma palettes, and varied paint consistencies and application methods.

The aim of the workshop is to help you become subtle in your approach to the darks in your paintings.  You’ll make them function as you choose, whether that’s mysterious and soft;  colorful and lively; or airy and luminous.  For painters who struggle with muddy, murky, or heavy shadows. this workshop will help!

We’ll work from both life and photos in this workshop.  Exercises will be based on simple still lifes set up in your studio, and then we’ll extend those lessons by applying them to photos in your preferred genres from figurative to landscape.

This workshop is suitable for artists working in opaque mediums.  Ingrid’s demos will be in oil.
