Demystify portrait painting in this introductory exploration of painting a face in stages. Indirect painting, or building up a painting in layers, is one of the keys to creating believable lifelike flesh tones and gorgeous sculptural form. In this course, we take our time to create a single portrait painting from a photo reference and learn to parse the alchemy of portraits into four distinct manageable stages: drawing, value-based underpainting, color, and finishing techniques. Weekly demonstration will focus on the development of form with special attention paid to structural anatomy, principles of light color, and the unique tools of indirect painting such as transparency and opacity, glazing, and broken color. Leave this class with a method you can practice and apply to any subject matter. The Instructor will demonstrate in oil but any opaque medium is acceptable.
