Heat, light, color, interior and exterior space, family, food, contentment…Dig into painting all the lush sensation of summer along with one of the greatest and most idiosyncratic colorists to ever pick up a brush. Bonnard painted from memory almost exclusively from his drawings, away from the motif and in the presence of his inner life— and he spent his whole life at it. There’s a lot to study and get our wheels turning in our own work, avoiding literal-ness, acknowledging the primacy of both paint and color to express space, both physical and interior. Beyond realism, but always concerned with observation, sensation, and design, We will work with smaller transcriptions of Bonnard’s paintings the first 2 weeks, and then throw ourselves into several larger canvases inspired by his luminous environments. We will ask ourselves how prolonged engagement with painted color can create a sense of form and light that lives and breathes, and study some wonderful paintings exploring such questions! As part of exploring life with that gusto, we will work large the last few weeks!
Maximum class size 20 students. Live demo approx. 40-60 min weekly, there will be a weekly slide lecture and discussion, followed by limited feedback on each artist’s work. In depth feedback will happen in the group message board daily, and live the last week. Week 5 will be primarily critique, discussion and feedback.

When he’s not working, he is most often found in Northern California among some of the tallest and quietest trees on earth, where the illuminated fog sweeps in from the pacific. He shares his home and studio in the redwoods with his love, writer Kelly Gray, and two dogs: Hank, a terrier/beagle who remembers every single place he ever found street chicken, and Nootka, a very vocal and sweet husky pup who looks like the best giant squirrel ever. He plays bass and guitar, very poorly and with great enthusiasm. www.gageopdenbrouw.com
