About 5 years ago, I began to paint peonies every spring.  My favorite flower, they are lush beyond belief, and quite fleeting in their glory, a combination I find terribly poignant.

As they change so quickly, I had to develop a simple method of working with them, and what I arrived at was something like a small scale portrait—a light flower on a dark ground.

These paintings are for me an important marker of time and seasons, as well as a meditative, grounding process in the studio:  I know that the flower could be completely different tomorrow, or the light, or both, and so the whole process is a great exercise in distilling observation and simplifying complex form.

We will work from life in this class, and with whatever fresh flowers are easily available.

Ultimately this class is about a meditative approach to attention, and not about flower paintings as much as it is about setting up a simple motif that can serve as a framework for deep attention and observation.

All media are welcome in this class, I will be working mostly in pencil and ink wash, or perhaps charcoal, when drawing, and oils when painting.  The most important thing is that you are using media that are familiar to you.  Included below are the materials you are likely to see me using in demos etc.

The first two weeks will include exercises in drawing and working from master paintings as source and inspiration.

Born in 1977 and raised in Northern California, Gage Opdenbrouw is an award winning painter, teacher, and woodworker, who until recent times, traveled frequently both to paint and to teach. He now teaches live online courses in drawing and painting to artists from all over the country and around the world.

When he’s not working, he is most often found in Northern California among some of the tallest and quietest trees on earth, where the illuminated fog sweeps in from the pacific. He shares his home and studio in the redwoods with his love, writer Kelly Gray, and two dogs: Hank, a terrier/beagle who remembers every single place he ever found street chicken, and Nootka, a very vocal and sweet husky pup who looks like the best giant squirrel ever. He plays bass and guitar, very poorly and with great enthusiasm.
